Let the virus scan complete the whole entire scan and run the scan at least once a week. Usually you can set a schedule for it to run itself without you having to do anything but have the computer on.

1-2 year old laptop: 2-4hours depending on viruses/cookies/memory
old laptop with viruses: up to 6 hours (reccomended to do it overnight)
