How do you connect a PC to my laptop as a monitor?

I use to work testing laptop panels using LEM pixinator. If you use a newer PC then it may be possible. The trick is getting analog laptop panel to sinc with newer AGP card. then there is an issue of converting the data cable to VGA or DVI and inverting the power 5 or 10 volt. Radio Shack probably has the hardware to convert the power. not to difficult. the data cable lead can be bought online or possibley salvaged from the laptop it came from. then you will need to join that cable to a VGA adapter.

If the two PC's are networked, you can use the MaxiVista software, which extends your primary PC screen onto one (or more) network available PCs. The software is very simple to install.

Most laptops have a 15 pin connector on the back, which is the standard monitor cable connector. Most LCD/plasma TVs also have a 15 pin connector also, so you can go into your nearest computer/electronics store and pick up a 6ft 15pin monitor cable for under $20. If it is a modern laptop, it may have HDMI instead, in which case you can connect it to a HDMI monitor or most LCD/plasma TVs.

Buy a vga male to male cable. Make sure your PC and laptop, both have female VGA inputs. it looks like it has about 12 dots (a vga input) and also looks similar to a weird rectangle.

Who invented the laptop computer?

There were many engineering refinements to the laptop concept. Here are some of the significant developments:

The "clam shell" design which represents our modern laptop was created in 1979 by William Moggridge (a Briton) for GRiD Systems Corporation. GRiD's Compass Computer entered the market in 1981. GRiD was acquired by Tandy Corporation in 1988.

One of the first commercially available laptop computers was invented by Adam Osborne in 1981. It was called the "Osborne I" and cost $1795. It came bundled with $1500 worth of programs. It had a tiny computer screen built into it. The Osborne I and Kaypro II were not really laptops, but "luggables" - at 23.5 lb and 29 lb, respectively.

One of the first modern style of "laptops" may well have been the Radio Shack TRS-80 Model 100, with weight of approximately 3.1 lb.

Compaq Computer introduced their first computer which was considered portable around 1981 or 1982. It was about the same size as a modern mini-tower laid on its side, included a green monochrome monitor that was about 7 inches diagonally, and had a full-sized keyboard with a coiled cord that snapped over the monitor.

"The Dynabook concept was created by Alan Kay in 1968, two years before the founding of Xerox PARC. Kay wanted to make "A Personal Computer For Children Of All Ages." The ideas let to the development of the Xerox Alto prototype, which was originally called "the interim Dynabook". It embodied all the elements of a graphical user interface, or GUI, as early as 1972. The software component of this research was Smalltalk, which went on to have a life of its own independent of the Dynabook concept.

The Dynabook concept now known as a laptop computer or, (in some of its other incarnations) a tablet PC or slate computer with nearly eternal battery life and software aimed at giving children access to digital media. Adults could also use a Dynabook, but the target audience was children."

Compaq Portable circa 1981 or 1982?

I can't say if this was the definitive "invention" of the laptop, but I do remember that, when IBM PC XTs were running 8088 processors at 4.77MHz with 5MB disk drives, Compaq Computer introduced their first computer which was considered portable at the time. It was about the same size as a modern mini-tower laid on its side, included a green monochrome monitor that was about 7 inches diagonally, and had a full-sized keyboard with a coiled cord that snapped over the monitor. I think it ran an 8086 processor at 6 or 8MHz.

Below is a link to a site with several photographs.

Designed in 1979 by a Briton, William Moggridge, for Grid Systems Corporation, the Grid Compass was one fifth the weight of any model equivalent in performance and was used by NASA on the space shuttle program in the early 1980's. A 340K byte bubble memory lap-top computer with die-cast magnesium case and folding electroluminescent graphics display screen. Other computers before this were portable, but too heavy, and therefore, it is questionable if they can be called laptops. A few other models that were lightweight had two line, text only displays and should also be considered.

How do you connect a laptop to a PC?

There are mainly three ways of connecting a Laptop to a PC

1)Through LAN

2)Through Bluetooth

3)Through Wireless Router

The first one doesn't need any s/w(software), but a LAN card or NIC(network interface card) Ethernet Card , and a Twisted pair cable with RJ(register jack)45 crimped through cross over crimping on either sides of the wire.

The second one needs to have a Blue tooth dongle either inbuilt or an external one connected to both the Laptop and a PC.You need to install Blue tooth drivers.

The third one requires a Wireless Router that connects to your Internet Modem and broadcasts your signal wireless allowing computers to join your network. Once connected by network, have both computers join the homegroup and share files and folders. From each computer, depending on the shared folders, you can access the data on both the laptop and PC and therefore connecting them for easy transfer of data and anything else you might want to do.

There are several ways to connect a laptop to a PC.

  1. If you have an Ethernet card installed on your laptop and on your PC you can directly connect them with a cross-over LAN cable (in case You don't have network hub). or a straight LAN cable (if you are using a network hub or network switch between the computers).
  2. An ad-hoc wireless network if your PC and Laptop both have wireless cards.
  3. You can also get a special USB cable that connects 2 computers and allows data to be transferred between them. They are quite cheap and you can definitely find one on Ebay.

Option 1 generally no longer requires a special crossover cable. Most modern NICs (especially on laptops) will auto-sense which pairs they need to use for Tx/Rx.

The Difference Between

What is the difference between a laptop and a notebook or netbook?

LaptopA mobile computer with a full-sized keyboard, flip-up monitor and space for built-in optical or floppy-disk storage drives.

A laptop is designed to sit on your lap and you can therefore expect it to be quite large and loaded down with features and power.

The standard laptop computer would have some ,if not all, of the following features:

1. 14" - 17" (widescreen) TFT screen.

2. Nvidia GeForce or ATI Radeon graphics subsystem.

3. Internal DVD-ROM or DVD-RW drive

4. Large full featured keyboard.

5. 3 hour (+/-) battery life.

6. Upgradeable.

7. Integrated modem, network, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi capabilities.

8. High quality integrate audio and speaker system.

9. Low power consumption, high performance Intel Centrino style processor.

Laptops are designed to be capable of replacing an entire desktop PC if necessary whilst still offering desktop performance in a mobile platform.

Notebook

A mobile computer with a full-sized keyboard and a flip-up monitor. It does not have space for built-in optical or floppy-disk drives, but instead provides communication ports so that an external drive can be connected. This allows a notebook to be much thinner than a laptop.

The notebook computer would have some ,if not all, of the following features:

1. Ultralight. Less weight is better.

2. 4 - 5 hour battery life.

3. No internal floppy drive.

4. Minimal graphics subsystem.

5. No internal DVD or CD system.

6. 12" - 14" TFT screen.

7. Low profile (thin).

8. Integrated modem and network connection.

9. Smallest possible keyboard that retains functionality.

10. Low power consumption Celeron/Centrino or Sempron style processor.

In essence a notebook computer is designed to provide mobile computing that won't break your back yet still offer all the power the mobile users requires for work and some leisure pursuits. This portability normally comes at a price. The level of miniaturisation involved comes at a cost and high end notebooks can prove to be quite expensive.

Notebooks offer reasonable power and extreme portability.

Note: Some Notebooks pretend to be tablets (see blow) as their screens are touch sensitive can fold back to cover their keypads.

Netbook or Mini PC

A mobile computer with a keyboard and screen smaller than full size (some are less than half the size). As with a notebook, it does not have space for built-in storage drives, but does provide ports for connecting an external drive.

Tablet

A mobile computer without a keyboard. It has a monitor that forms one side of the device. The monitor is touch sensitive and can present a virtual keyboard when input is required. The Tablet does not have ports to attach peripherals and has no disk storage.

Some of the most popular Tablets are developments of high end phones rather than 'smaller' PCs and many of the newer Tablets are being released with special 'new' operating systems which have no relation to MS Windows. This means that applications - 'Apps' for them can be downloaded from the Internet and most of the users data and processing is provided from the Internet 'cloud computing'.

Are Lenovo notebooks better than Acer notebooks?

It does depend on what model you buy. A top of the line Acer is of course better than a bottom of the line Lenovo but if you purchase simular models then I would say the Lenovo is much better.

The 2 main reasons are that Acer has terrible support (not only have I read this on many forums but I have experienced it) and Lenovo uses higher quality parts.

What type of laptop and DJ software and song editing software is recommended for one to be an amateur DJ?

any newer laptop should do, as long as it has a good processor and a decent sound card.

as for the software:

Virtual DJ is a good DJ program ( not free)

Mixcraft is a program for producers, so you can create loops and songs with it (not free)

thenpurely for editing: audacity, a free program, very handy. (free, many addons with effects available)

i don't know about free DJ / producing software

How does the wireless Internet work on laptops?

In simple terms, you have two hardware devices that make up wireless connections. First, you have a Wireless Access Point or AP or WAP. A wireless access point is simply a wireless hub. An AP has antennas for sending and receiving the wireless signal to other wireless devices and it also has a cat 5 connection for connecting to the network.

The other device is a Wireless NIC. Wireless NIC's are manufactured for both desktop and laptop applications, however, the laptop NIC's are more popular. The wireless NIC's have a built-in antenna and it is also sends and receives signals. 802.11b/g devices send and receive at 2.4GHz.

Absolutely fantastic! A friend of mine would bring over his laptop & while I sat with my desktops poorly performing internet connection, he'd be connected through a anonymous IP that was lucky to have been useful in getting his Apple Mac online & with great download speeds. Lucky, considering that they somehow had their radiation permeating into the inner spaces of my home.

In fact, I should investigate whether or not the dangerous, brain zapping, wireless radiation is still violating the spaces of my inner sanctum. Imagine that, it's their produced & marketed product, yet my private property is infiltrated by it without any benefit produced other than the billions they rake in while emanating their intrusively trespassing, dangerous radiation

Honestly, I am going to wrap some tin foil around my head and pray the aliens don't get me.

Dell Vostro 1200 Battery Maintenance Tip?

  • Do not dump too many programs in to your laptop. You may argue that today's processors can handle any number of programs; well- it is partially true. Laptop processors are way more delicate than desktop processors, the more programs you load on your laptop, more it will be pushed to the limit and may breakdown at some point. Have a look at your programs atleast once a week and remove the unwanted ones, the tiny ones even.
  • Do not let too many unwanted processes run in your laptop. Check the processes that are running on your laptop, google their names and know whether it is a must needed one or an unwanted one. If it is an unwanted one, make sure you stop them and also make sure that they don't start automatically on your next restart (You can do this will the help of options like msconfig , get proper help if you not sure about which process to stop).
  • It is not a sin to play games on your laptop. But loading a game that is 30GB and playing it all the time can seriously jeopardize the performance of your laptop parts (processor, keyboard etc). Load games that does not stress the processor or play online games, this will keep your laptop going for a long long time.
  • Never plugin the charger to the laptop until the laptop battery is dry. Imagine your laptop just like a mobile, when you are using it, you should only use it without the charger being plugged in. This practice will increase your laptop battery life tremendously!
  • Do not use any liquid that is not recommended to clean your laptop screens, laptop screens have delicate coatings on them and if you use a wrong chemical to clean it, it may ruin the screen permanently. Use a dry cloth to clean your laptop screens, keep your laptop away while you are eating or drinking and dont clean your screen too often.
  • One of the laptop parts that gets quickly affected because of bad usage is the disc players in the laptop. The players are not your coffee stand , always remember and do not burn CD/DVD unless and until it is much needed. Burning DVDs often will decrease the life of the players as well as the batteries as disc burning consumes lot of power!
  • Do not use more than one anti virus in your laptop (malware is also an anti virus remember). Having too anti viruses may lead to some unwanted / heavy processes to be started. So better have one light anti virus version like the Microsoft security essentials or AVG (will never recommend McAfee or Norton as they are too heavy for a laptop).
  • Please use your desktop to do things like rendering a complex media file etc. Laptop processors have limited capabilities and cannot handle things like rendering a complex animation file for hours together.
  • Do not plugin things like USB fans or other fancy items to showup when the laptop is running on batteries, laptops are never designed to run them and it will make your battery dead in no time.
  • It is better to sell your laptop and buy a latest one than to upgrade individual parts in the laptop. Since the components of the laptop are designed to match precisely, the chance of an upgrade component like the processor to fit all the other parts in the laptop happens only once in a while.
  • Use free programs like ccleaner and clean unwanted files once in a while , do disk defragmentation atleast once in a month and make sure the partitions in the laptop are equally done.
  • Do not let your laptop heatup. If your laptop is hot, it either means that there is no proper ventilation or processor is stressed. In this case, you can turn off the laptop for a while and then turn it on.
  • Treat your laptop like a friend and not like a mere electronic gadget. This way, you will not feel stressed while maintaining your laptop.
