This is a difficult one. If you grow a tree from a seed you do not know whether the resulting fruit will be worth eating or cooking. There is of course a thousand to one chance you could find a wothwhile new variety. To answer the question the minute the seed germinates it is a tree how long it takes to bear fruit depends on too many variables to give an exact answer. Edit: Based on the size of the trees that I have bought, (and the one tree that I had that sprouted from seed), I would estimate between five and ten years from seed to new apples. However, some seeds won't sprout at all, because the hybridization of varieties sometimes produces sterile seeds. Also, apple seeds need a long period of very cold weather, like a "winter", usually freezing, or very close to it, before they will sprout. There are occasional good exceptions. Long story shortened: my father had an apple sapling in his vegetable garden which had sprouted ("volunteered") from seed in his composted table scraps. We transplanted the tree to my new home, and enjoyed very large, juicy Delicious (variety) apples for about fifteen years, until we moved. I wish I had cuttings from that tree to work with now!

It depends on many factors such as tree variety, size of sapling at transplanting, and climate, but most trees start putting on fruit in their third season.
