Valproate (trade name Depakote or Depakene) usually begins to work almost immediately. If you are using it for seizures, you will not notice any time lag. If you are using it as a mood stabilizer for Bipolar disorder, you may notice a lag of a few days until you really begin to feel better. Part of this lag is subjective - even though the drug is working, it has not done enough to make you really notice the results yet.

Topamax is a type of anticonvulsant drug that may be used to treat epilepsy in those aged 2 years or older. How long Topamax stays in your system depends on how much you have been taking and how long for. Topamax generally stays in your system for between 4 and 6 days.

How long does Topamax stay in the system? My son takes a 1/2 (50 MG) in the morning but he is taking Zonegren at night. We are having trouble with his memory so that is the reason for adding the Zonegren. I notice he is still having trouble with memory. The doctor told me that Topamax doesn't stay in the system very long. So, my question is....how long? My thought is to have my son take it very early in the morning when he gets up (approx. 5:45 - 6AM) and maybe by the time he gets to school at 8:45 - 9AM the fogginess from the Topamax would wear off and maybe he can start to remember and his grades will come back up again. Can you help me with this question?

Thank you for your time.
