In general food spends about 4 hours in the stomach before being moved to the small intestine, where nutrients are removed. It takes around 8-12 hours for food to normally reach the large intestine where water is removed before the waste is expelled by you.

∙ 13y agoFood can stay in the large intestine for two to three years. Though some believe that food only stays there for a few hours, it is in fact almost-poo that gets stuck in the rugae of the large intestine and cannot be removed unless one undergoes drastic surgery.
