In general food spends about 4 hours in the stomach before being moved to the small intestine, where nutrients are removed. It takes around 8-12 hours for food to normally reach the large intestine where water is removed before the waste is expelled by you.

Food can stay in the large intestine for two to three years. Though some believe that food only stays there for a few hours, it is in fact almost-poo that gets stuck in the rugae of the large intestine and cannot be removed unless one undergoes drastic surgery.
