From Kakadu to Darwin is a distance of about 251 kilometres, and a journey which takes around three and a half hours to travel.
You cannot travel from Cairns to Darwin on the Ghan. You would have to travel from Cairns down to Brisbane, where you would then need to take another train to Sydney. At Sydney you could catch a train to Adelaide, and only at Adelaide could you catch the Ghan to Darwin. Total travel would be about five days.
Depending on the bus company and tourist stops, it is about 4 - 5 hours including sight seeing and "Pit -Stops". Some have straight thru trips which take about 3 1/2 hours and some take over a day. Depends on what type of tourist package is involved. It is a truly awesome adventure with lots of great side-track destinations for the wild-at-heart.

No, not directly. A train can be caught from Brisbane to Sydney (not the most comfortable of trips). The Indian-Pacific can then be caught from Sydney to Adelaide, and this offers a variety of accommodation, from single and double cabins to just upright seats in the main carriages. From Adelaide one can board the Ghan to Darwin.
Take the distance and divide by the speed of the train. That is how long it took for the train to travel.
