This question is difficult to answer due to there being no real definition of what you need to be a "firefighter." However, commonly accepted is the idea that a true firefighter must have Fire Fighter 1 certification. This course takes on average 150 hours, which can be spread over the course of one or two months, or possibly broken up into sections. This all varies depending on your location.

In addition, most firefighters will continue their training. Courses such as Fire Fighter 2, Emergency Medical Technician, Vehicle Rescue, Fire Officer, and many more are offered to firefighters. Many firefighters continue taking courses their entire career to keep their skills up to date, and to expand upon their knowledge and abilities.

to become a firefighter you must start with Firefighter 1 which is about 130 hours. that will give you a good start. after that you need to fined a fire department you would like to work for and ask them what they require. most will send you to a academy. there you will get all the training you need and that can take up to a year. every department is different but plan on a good 6 months to a year be for your on a engine.

It depends of if the department your interested in will hire you before you have all the certifications required. If not it will take about a year to go through Fire I, Hazmat Tech, and First Responder/EMT-B. After that however long it takes you to get hired, then the first year is your probational period, where depending on your department, you will have to do more of the dirty work around the station and may include hazing to some degree. Also during this period you will not have many responsibilities on the fire ground. After this first year you will get your black helmet and be considered a firefighter

It takes a few minutes to fill out the form and become a member of a volunteer fire department.

If you want to become certified, it would take a few hundred hours of schooling. AFter you are certified, it can take YEARS before you are considered a good firefighter.
