My Name is Dr. Patrick Vegar. I am a Doctor or Chemistry (DChem). I recieved my Degree from the University of Queensland. It took 5.5 years to receive a Doctorate in that discipline. Although, you must complete your Bachelor and Master of Chemistry before you advance on further, it is a University requirement.

Well, it only takes just as long as for you to get your bachelors in chemical engineering. These two fields, aside from the similarities in the name, are very different!

What we learn in chemical engineering is to take what chemists do at the microscale and develop it into the macroscale. This is not easy. Several core courses need to be taken focusing around process control, seperation, environmental considersations and so forth, that are not specifically taught to chemists.

You can still do a masters in chemical engineering, by all means. But amongst us, you have to wear the ring you earn in your bachelors to qualify as a chemical engineer.

Er, this is pretty much a not good question, for to be a chemistrist, you need a long time of training and you must learning various kinds of relative subjects. If you really want to be, then learn from now on one step by another, one day however, you can acheive it. Good luck!

Graduate students studying chemistry commonly specialize in a subfield, such as analytical chemistry or polymer chemistry, depending on their interests and the kind of work they wish to do. For example, those interested in doing drug research in the pharmaceutical industry usually develop a strong background in medicinal or synthetic organic chemistry. However, students normally need not specialize at the undergraduate level. In fact, undergraduates who are broadly trained have more flexibility when searching for jobs than if they have narrowly defined their interests. Most employers provide new graduates additional training or education. In government or industry, beginning chemists with a bachelor's degree work in quality control, perform analytical testing, or assist senior chemists in R&D laboratories. Many employers prefer chemists and materials scientists with a Ph.D., or at least a master's degree, to lead basic and applied research. Within materials science, a broad background in various sciences is preferred. This broad base may be obtained through degrees in physics, engineering, or chemistry. You can do it in 4 yrs. However if you have the ability & resources to do an additional year I would suggest to take 5 yrs. The courses can be time consuming & some are difficult so if you don't have as light of a load of classes it will help with your studies of the chemical engineering courses. -- JMO

Depends how much you want to study!

Normally four years after school to finish B.Tech., further two years for M.Tech.

Then its upto you. Do a Ph.D. (4-5 years), Post Doc. (2-3 years)

Chemical Engineering prepares students for anything. The Chemistry aspect teaches you process on a molecular level and how they affect everything else. The engineering aspect teaches you math and other engineering concepts such as Thermodynamics and Transfer Operations. Well, believe it or not, it is somewhat possible. The chair in my chemical engineering department at the University of Toronto,is actually an applied chemist who took a masters in chemical engineering. But, in terms of knowledge, I believe that a chemist lacks fundamental knowledge about thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, process control, etc.. These core courses really define a chemical engineer at the bachelors level. In short, you will not be considered a chemical engineer with a chemistry degree. You can get a masters aftewards in chemical engineering, but the uses for that are somewhat debatable.

So 5 years for him, which I think would be the fastest anyone could get it done. Usually takes 6 years though if your school doesn't offer this option.
