∙ 15y agoTo become a counselor it usually takes masters degree or Phd in psychology or social work. So usually 6-10 years. There are some counseling positions that you can obtain with a bachelor's (4-year) degree, but they are rare and usually specialized. While mental health counseling is generally performed by a clinical or counseling psychologist who has earned their doctorate, there are licenses that can be earned by those who have obtained a master's degree in psychology or social work (for example a LMFT or Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist). There are counseling positions available for troubled youth in some communities and a bachelor's degree is the usually an acceptable. requirement for that position.
