Typically, it takes nine months to a year depending on the school. I personally recommend you take the program through a community college rather than a private school. Make sure that within the program of study, you become registered, certified, and you have an x-ray license This will make you much more marketable, and you salary will be higher.

Typically you get a Vocational Certificate in Dental Assisting, not an actual degree. Depending on the institution offering the course it can take anywhere from 6 months to 12 months. Usually a local community college will offer the program as well as other places. From my experience as an assistant and working with other assistants, usually the better education is going to come from the community college.
