It's about 16000km by road to travellaround, not including the island of Tasmania. 2 people driving in shifts could do it in about 10 days. I once spent 3 months of travelling and didn't even cover 2 states completely. A lot of tourists give themselves between 3 and 6 months to have a good look at the place. Places that we aussies reckon you have to see are; Sydney, the beaches on the NSW north coast, Fraser island, the Great Barrier Reef, Cairns, Uluru (Ayers Rock), Kings Canyon, Perth, Broome, the Twelve Apostles on the Great Ocean road, Melbourne, the Snowfields (winter only) and Canberra. It takes nearly 3 days to drive from one end of Queensland to the other, or 6 days to drive through Western Australia. The next is the contrasts, tropical forests and endless deserts, thriving modern cities and one horse towns. In some parts it may reach nearly 40 degrees celsius (100 degrees f) and in other spots at the same time people may be snow skiing. The coastal fringe is green and alive, the interior various shades of brown. The animal life varies from cute and cuddly koalas and possums to a whole bunch of snakes, Spiders and marine life that are capable of killing painfully and quickly. If you have more money than time, consider hiring a small plane and pilot to cover the great distances quickly, and to get a good perspective of its size and contrasts.

That depends on how fast you drive.

If you don't stop anywhere, don't get lost, used only the major highways between cities, and didn't crash or break down, it would take about a month.

To drive around Australia takes at least 6 months and more, so you can actually enjoy the experiences and destinations. Any less than 6 months turns it into a race and would not be enjoyable. There are many places you can stay for a week or weeks.

To drive around the main roads of Australia is about 15,500 kilometres. If you are thinking of driving around Australia as a holiday allow 6 months.

There are a lot of places to see off the main highway so this extends the amount of kilometres traveled to about 20,000 or more. Then many places are so amazing that you can easily stay a week there.

Further information:

If one travelled via the capital cities (not including Hobart on the island of Tasmania), the distance would be as follows: Brisbane to Darwin, via Townsville - 3,896km; Darwin to Perth - 4178km; Perth to Adelaide to Melbourne - 3426km; Melbourne to Sydney to Brisbane - 1975km. Total = 13,488km.

If one travelled via Highway 1, the road that continues all the way around Australia, the distance is 14,523km.
