I was just up in Alaska(Oct of 2008). I'm not sure which part of the world you are in but I flew into Anchorage and drove up to Fairbanks. I think anywhere just north of Anchorage you'll be able to see them but when you get up to Fairbanks and out of the city lights you'll see them just fine. The best time to see them I have been told is Feb and Mar. I guess that's when the skies are freest of cloud cover. Anyways it's about a 5 hour drive from Anchorage to Fairbanks.
LAX to Fairbanks is ten to twelve hours total, depending on your luck with layovers. You'd be taking a private charter to Delta if you insist on flying the rest of the way, but I wouldn't recommend it as you won't have a car when you get there. It's an hour and a half drive in a rental car from Fairbanks to Delta.
