The rules vary from state to state.

First of all, term lengths are two years in New Hampshire and Vermont and four years in each of the other 48 states.

Some states have no limits on how many term a governor may serve. Some states limit each governor to no more than two terms. In some states a person may serve more than twice, but may not serve more than twice in a row. In Virginia, a governor may never succeed himself/herself.

States that have no term limits at all are Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Washington and Wisconsin.

States that have restrictions regarding consecutive terms are Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Kansas, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota and Virginia.

States in which a governor may not serve more than two terms ever are Arkansas, California, Delaware, Georgia, Hawaii, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, West Virginia and Wyoming.
