(If you don't want a blood transfusion, you must discuss this with the Anesthesiologist before surgery. There are forms that you can fill out, requesting blood substitutes and/or alternatives, releasing the Anesthesiologist of any responsibility. There are many doctors who now prefer "Bloodless Surgery") Their job ends when the surgery is considered a 'success', the patient is awakened in the recovery room, and is stable and aware of his surroundings.
