There are several different types of white blood cells (leukocytes) which are usually characterized as granulocytes and agranulocytes.

Granulocytes (polymorphonuclear leukocytes) are leukocytes characterized by the presence of differently staining granules in their cytoplasm when viewed under light microscopy. There are three types of granulocytes: neutrophils, basophils and eosinophils.

Agranulocytes (mononuclear leucocytes) are leukocytes characterised by the apparent absence of granules in their cytoplasm. These cells include lymphocytes, monocytes and macrophages.

  • neutrophils live for 6 hours to a few days
  • basophils live for a few hours to a few days
  • eosinophils live for 8 to 12 days
  • lymphocytes live from weeks up to years
  • monocytes live for hours to days
  • macrophages live for only days when they are activated and from months to years when they are immature.

White blood cells, or leukocytes (also spelled "leucocytes"; from the Greek word leuko- meaning "white"), are cells of the immune system involved in defending the body against both infectious disease and foreign materials. Five[1] different and diverse types of leukocytes exist, but they are all produced and derived from a multipotent cell in the bone marrow known as a hematopoietic stem cell. They live for about 3 to 4 days in the average human body. Leukocytes are found throughout the body, including the blood and lymphatic system.[2]

The number of leukocytes in the blood is often an indicator of disease. There are normally between 4×109 and 1.1×1010 white blood cells in a litre of blood, and ranging from 7 and 21 micrometres in diameter, they make up approximately 1% of blood in a healthy adult.[3] An increase in the number of leukocytes over the upper limits is called leukocytosis, and a decrease below the lower limit is called leukopenia. The physical properties of leukocytes, such as volume, conductivity, and granularity, may change due to activation, the presence of immature cells, or the presence of malignant leukocytes in leukemia.

Human blood actually contains three different classes of cells: red blood cells for carrying oxygen, five types of white blood cells for fighting infection and platelet cells for wound clotting. As such, each type of cell has its own lifespan, from a few hours to several decades.
