According to the IRS, this usually takes 8-12 weeks but can take longer. It can take up to 8 weeks before the IRS will even show the return in their system. I'd recommend mailing all ammended returns with delivery confirmation so that at least you'll have the peace of mind of knowing that they have in fact received it. I filed an ammended return this year myself- sent it in on March 20th. I was notified today, June 30th, after calling the IRS, that my check would be mailed out this Friday, July 3rd. Unfortunately, ammended returns take a very long time to process. I know how you feel though- it's no fun waiting when you need the money now. What comes first state or federal income tax check?

I live in Michigan and after e-filing my 2010 taxes I received my state check first. The state check came in the mail a little less than 2wks. I've yet to receive my federal return.

What to do if you filed your taxes got your return but forgot to submit another tax form?

First, the set tax forms that you fill out and send to the government is called a "return." The check that you get back from the government is called a "refund" -- not a return. If this form affected the amount of tax that you should have paid or was a material omission of something you were supposed to disclose on your tax return, then you file what is known as an amended return. To file an amended return, recalculate your taxes. Fill out a new Form 1040 with the new, changed amounts. Mark the top of each page that has changes on it with the word "AMENDED" in big letters. Then fill out Form 1040-X: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040x.pdf 1040-X instructions are here: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040x.pdf Staple only the pages of your tax return that have changes on them (and only the changed version of the pages) to Form 1040-X and mail. You can use a computer to prepare your amended return (most tax software packages have a provision for creating an amended return), but when you are done you must print out the pages and mail them in. Your state should also have a form similar to 1040X for filing amended state returns.

Why did SCDOR issue your refund as a debit card when you wanted a check?

SCDOR is issuing taxpayer refunds in the form of a prepaid debit card this year in place of a paper check. If the taxpayer prefers to have a paper check, on their tax return they may choose to receive a paper check or may choose to direct deposit their refund, if filing electronically.

What if your tax preparer did your taxes wrong what can you do?

You can make a change or an adjustment to a tax return you've already filed by filing an amended return. Here are the top 10 things the IRS wants you to know about amending your federal tax return. If you need to amend your tax return, use Form 1040X,Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return.Use Form 1040X to correct previously filed Forms 1040, 1040A or 1040EZ. The 1040X can also be used to correct a return filed electronically. However, you can only paper file an amended return. You should file an amended return if you discover any of the following items were reported incorrectly: filing status, dependents, total income, deductions or credits.Generally, you do not need to file an amended return for math errors. The IRS will automatically make the correction. You usually do not need to file an amended return because you forgot to include tax forms such as W-2s or schedules. The IRS normally will send a request asking for those documents.Be sure to enter the year of the return you are amending at the top of Form 1040X. Generally, you must file Form 1040X within three years from the date you filed your original return or within two years from the date you paid the tax, whichever is later. If you are amending more than one tax return, prepare a 1040X for each return and mail them in separate envelopes to the IRS campus for the area in which you live. The 1040X instructions list the addresses for the campuses. If the changes involve another schedule or form, you must attach it to the 1040X.If you are filing to claim an additional refund, wait until you have received your original refund before filing Form 1040X. You may cash that check while waiting for any additional refund. If you owe additional tax for 2009, you should file Form 1040X and pay the tax as soon as possible to limit interest and penalty charges. Interest is charged on any tax not paid by the due date of the original return, without regard to extensions.

If i had to file an amended tax form which caused you to owe will you still get a stimulus check?

If you did not owe anything on the original return, it probably comes down to timing. The question is will they process the amended return before they send out a stimulus check. It could easily go either way -- it's possible that they will send the stimulus check before they get around to processing the amended return.

How do you file amended taxes in US?

File Form 1040X to amend your federal individual income taxes in the US. Many states have a similar form, which simply adds an "X" to the original form number. The form varies for other entity types: Corporation: Form 1120X S corporation: Form 1120S, check the box for "Amended return" Partnership: Form 1065, check the box for "Amended return" To determine which form to file using the IRS website (link attached), find the Instructions for your originally filed form then look for the "Amended Return" instruction. It will tell you which form to file if you need to amend your return.

How do you check status of a 1040x?

You cannot check the status of a refund for an amended return on the automated tax line or by accessing "Where's my Refund" on the website. It depends. Filing electronicly 8-10 days Filing paper 4-6 weeks There also could be delays due to processing errors.

What does processing delays mean when expect a tax refund?

If this is an original return, 90 percent of the time you'll still receive your refund within three weeks with direct deposit, six weeks for a paper check. If it's an amended return, normally it's 6 to 8 weeks, and a processing delay will add another 45 days.
