It depends on which ancient pyramids you're talking about.
If you're feeling generous about your definition of "pyramid", the Babylonian ziggurats were built between roughly 4000 BC and 600 BC.
The Egyptian pyramids were built between roughly 3000 BC and 1700 BC; the Great Pyramid (the one for Khufu/Cheops) was finished around 2560 BC. Khafre's pyramid (the slightly smaller one near the Great Pyramid) was built shortly after that.
Mesoamerican pyramid-building started around 1000 BC and continued (in various different cultures) pretty much up until the European invasion in the 16th century. This kind of takes us out of "ancient" times and well into historical ones, though.
There have been a large number of other cultures that have built objects that could with varying degrees of charity be referred to as pyramids; so unless you narrow it down considerably, the best we can say is "probably between 6000 and 500 years ago".
The pyramids of ancient Egypt were built by the Egyptian population as a memorial to their pharaohs. The pharaohs demanded that the pyramids be built in order to honor themselves. The pyramids were linked to power & the regions of ancient Egypt.

No, there are no tunnels from pyramids to the center of the Earth. Such claims are purely speculative and not supported by any scientific evidence. Pyramids were built for various purposes such as tombs or religious monuments, not for connecting to the Earth's core.
Most of the limestone used to build the Giza pyramids was quarried locally.
After the construction of the pyramids, the ancient Egyptians believed in an afterlife where the soul would journey to the underworld to be judged by the god Osiris. They were buried in tombs filled with treasures and belongings to accompany them in the afterlife.
The idea of the afterlife appealed to the ancient Egyptians because they thought that one day the people they put in the pyramids would rise for the dead and would go into the afterlife.
