There have been two interregnums. From 1135-1153, King Stephen and Queen Matilda each disputed the legtimacy of the other, and there was no effective monarch in place. Then from 1649-1660, Cromwell fulfilled the role of monarch without claiming the crown. But both times, there was still a royal family on the scene.
