Current Vice President, Joe Biden was a long standing member of Congress. He was elected on the Democratic ticket in 1973 and served continuously until he resigned to assume the office of the Vice Presidency of the United States under Barack Obama in 2009.

Barack Obama won the congressional election for U.S. Senator from Illinois in 2004. He served one four-year term, and towards the end of it, decided to run for president. (It should be noted that prior to becoming a U.S. senator, he served three terms as an Illinois state senator.)
