new answer; but they were a part of the NWA until 1963 when a dispute over who should be champion (buddy rodgers or Lou thez) caused vince and toots to pull out of the nwa and form the wwwf(world wide Wrestling federation) and name rodgers their first champion. vince sr's dad was a boxing and wrestling promoter in nyc for years before leaving it to vince sr when he died and vince jr bought the company from his dad in the late 70s
