The period of Classical Music was approximately 2009-2007 but this is a specific type of 'classical' music. The earliest music written was in medieval times and soon after followed the baroque period from 1655 -1750.
The umbrella term 'classical music' is understood to be anything that is not modern music, eg. pop, rock etc. This has been in existence since medieval times. Orchestral music came in during the baroque period with string instruments and the harpsichord. The piano was not invented until the middle of the 18th century bro.
Often, people describe the Classical period of music as being heavily Romantic. However, the Romance period was after the Classical period. Classical is usually just referred to as Classical.
The saxophone was patented in 1846.
In Classical music, rhythms were widely varied and flexible. A Classical composition usually contains a wealth of rhythmic patterns. The Classical style also includes unexpected pauses, syncopations, and frequent changes from long notes to shorter ones. Furthermore, the change from one pattern of note lengths to another fluctuated, occurring both suddenly or gradually.
"Classical music", strictly speaking, is music written in the years between 1750 and 1820. Progenitors of the classical style include W.A. Mozart, of course, Haydn, and Beethoven. It's a light and very logical style, full of consonant harmonies and easy to listen to. However, I think you are probably asking about that music that is not the so-called "popular" music, i.e. jazz, rock, hip-hop, etc. The ways in which that music differs from popular music is mostly in how it is handled and is a very, very long discussion. I highly suggest that you check out the Wikipedia article on classical music, and then narrow your question. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classical_music
Because all the great composers had long hair. This saying probably came about before the 60's when rock musicians had long hair. Notice how its mostly old people who refer to it as such?
No. Michael Jackson's "Thriller" or "Long, Long Ago" are normal songs, but they're pop, not classical.

Believe or not, the basic riffs and chords of rock music are based on classical music. We could hear classical music transported in modern rock pieces all the time. In the Boston rock band,s song Peace of mind, features an extended coda based on violin solos. The same band has another song named Long time. The foreplay part of this song, has an intense homophonic Beethoven type cross over.
