It was designated a "forest reserve" in 1893, a national monument in 1908, and a national park in 1919.

It took so long to receive federal protection because residents of Arizona were outraged at what they called, "a federal land grab." Today's residents are so proud of what the federal government did, that Arizona is now called the "Grand Canyon State."
