Since the 1960's, so a little over 40 years.
The Democrats hold a majority in the Senate.
The Democrats did not have majorities in the House and Senate for very long-- about twenty-two months total. Mr. Obama took office in January 2009 when both the house and senate were majority Democrats. But by November 2010, when the mid-term elections took place, the House changed control to the Republicans. And the Democrats still maintained a slim majority in the Senate.
Democrats controlled BOTH house from 1955 until 1980 (26 years). From 1981 until 1987 the Republicans controlled the Senate and the Democrats the House. Democrats recaptured both houses in 87 and held them until 95 when the Republicans took both houses and held them until 2005.
the Democrats control the Senate in 2011
As of now, the Democrats in the US Senate lost 8 seats to the Republicans. There will be more Republicans in the Senate, now, than Democrats, meaning the the Republicans will control the Senate. They already control the House.
During Richard Nixon's presidency, which lasted from 1969 to 1974, the Senate was controlled by the Democratic Party for most of that time. The Democrats held the majority in the Senate from 1969 until early 1973, after which the Republicans briefly gained control. However, by the end of Nixon's presidency, the Democrats regained control of the Senate.
There are 56 members in the senate
Since 1950 the majority party has either been the Democrats or the Republicans. Neither party has held the majority in the Senate for the last 60 years. Currently, the Democrats hold the majority, but, that will probably change sometime in the future as it always had in the past.
