The use of wood-pulp paper in schools dates from the 18th century, but paper was not always affordable even through the 19th century. On the American frontier, especially, it was sometimes difficult for schools to obtain supplies of books and paper. The automation of mills led to cheap newsprint, cardboard, and pulp paper by the mid-19th century, and these huge production facilities soon made paper a disposable commodity.
