There is some controversy with regards to the length of a dog's memory. It is generally accepted that you have two seconds to praise or correct a dog because this is how long they remember performing an action or behavior.
I have known dogs that acted like they remembered humans they have lived with after a very long separation. The jury is still out, but dogs have a very good memory.
Of course, camels have a stronger memory than dogs.

Dog's real memory (stuff they can keep in their head), is rather short 5-15 minutes. Dogs associative memory is rather long, allowing dogs to trained for tasks with repetition and classical condition. This varies with the strength of association (training) and the breed. Most trained dogs will remember condition for weeks or months, even if they are removed from the conditioning environment. Deeply embedded memories (owner) might last far longer.
The Long Memory was created in 1952.
