There is no data on the average length, but the breed standard requires male Labrador retrievers to be 22-1/2 to 24-1/2 inches at the withers (i.e. height at shoulder) and females 21-1/2 to 23-1/2, weighing 65 to 80 lbs. for males, 55 to 70 lbs. or females. The length from the point of the shoulder to the point of the rump should be equal to or only slightly longer than the distance from the withers to the ground.
In other words, if you imagine looking at the side of a Lab and ignore the head and tail for a moment, the back length and height should be roughly the same, giving the dog a square-shaped proportion.
Labs obviously exist that do not meet this criterion, but they are then not technically show-worthy Labs (and may not be purebred, either). Many Labs in the U.S. known as "American Labs" are taller than the breed standard, but these dogs could not be shown at a dog show as a result. "English Labs" are a bit squatter and usually meet the standard.
