No species of deer hibernate.
Running away while keeping the tail down is the first reaction of a frightened mule deer [Odocoileus hemionus]. One of the functions of the tail is communication among deer. Thus a mule deer with the tail kept down is communicating to other mule deer alarm, danger, escape, hide.A mule deer's tail is black-tipped. So when fleeing, the deer gives predators the impression of an escaping bull's-eye, because of the whiteness of the rump just above and to each side of the black-tipped tail.
Mule deer have black on the tail, and wider sprung antlers than white tails.
a white tailed deer has a white tail and the rest of its body fur is brownFrom another user:White tailed deer have a white under side of their tail which they show when running as a warning to other deer. They also have white speckles.its a deer that has a white tail white under belly and you will know if its a white tail deer cause when it is spooked its tail goes up and that warns other deer also shoot it especaly if its a buck.the white tailed deer is a nice deer sometimes mean to other animals.
The Black-tailed deer live in the forested mountains and foothills of the Pacific coast. They do not migrate, but they seek lower elevations during winter.
The difference between mule deer and white tale deer is that mule deer are slightly larger than white tales and live in colder areas. The white tale deer's tale is white on the end and the mule deer's is black. Mule deer have more of a brown gray color and the white tale is more red.
A White Tailed Deer uses it's tail to communicate to other deer. White can be seen for long distances in the forest. A raised tail usually signals danger and a deer will usually raise it's tail when running from danger. I have watched deer simply raise their tail to signal to other deer that it is there. When in "heat" a Doe will raise it's tail to signal to a Buck that it is ready to mate. Most often, in this situation, the tail is only raised half way. Not all deer raise their tail when running. I have watched mature Bucks run with their tail flat against it's rear. I assume this is because the mature Buck does not want to be seen nor is it concerned about warning other deer.
