I had the modified kidner procedure on 29th June and will be in a cast for 6 weeks. During this time I am not to weight bear at all. After that I will be in an 'air boot' for another 6 weeks where I will be able to weight bear. I am presently in week 5 since the op.
The operation went well and I have been virtually pain free. The main consideration is swelling. You really have to keep your foot up high and I have been told that the swelling won't go away for up to a year. I have read lots of articles about this and feel that my consultant has been very realistic with regards to time scales and am happy to be patient (so far!).
Had modified done as a 20 yr old when I was active in sports. Recovery was as follows: complete bedrest for 10 days, literally not getting out of bed except for bathroom, foot always wrapped, iced, and elevated. 5 weeks on crutches in a hard, non weight bearing cast, elevating when possible. One week non weight bearing in a boot. Two weeks slowly putting weight back on while in boot, using crutches as support. Walking without boot or crutches, feels weird at first with some pain while regaining leg muscle. Optional physical therapy to speed strengthening. Slow jog, eventually back to running and sports, always with an ankle brace for extra support.
my doctor told me it would last anywhere from 45-55 minutes
