Macy's introduced the first large inflated balloon characters in 1927. The first year, the balloons were filled with air, not helium, and had to be supported by poles. The designer, Tony Sarg, referred to them as "upside-down marionettes." The first cartoon character introduced that year was Felix the Cat. Other balloons included a caricature of singer/actor Eddie Cantor, a dinosaur, a group of cavemen, and assorted turkeys, chickens and ducks.
The longest distance flown by any chicken is 301 1/2 feet. (as the crow flies)

Since 1947, the National Turkey Federation and the Poultry and Egg National Board have given a turkey to the US president at a White House ceremony. Until 1989 when President George H. W. Bush officially pardoned a turkey was for the first time, the turkeys were usually treated like any other Thanksgiving turkeys. Since then, these White House celebrities have been given presidential reprieves from their death sentences. Some have been flown to California to act as honorary grand marshals for Disneyland's Thanksgiving Day parade.
The first manned aircraft was a hot air balloon created by the Montgolfier brothers, its maiden flight occurred on October 15th 1783. If this balloon was named, the name has been lost to history. Presumably one could call it "The Montgolfier Balloon."
