There is a multitude of different terms that may be served. Most common are 4 or 6 year terms based upon how long the military has to send you to school to be trained at your job.

Each and every person who enlists in to any branch of service will automatically sign a contract for a total of 8 years called a Military Service Obligation (MSO), the typical enlistment period is between 2-6 years depending on the branch you choose and the job you qualify for. Now keep in mind if you sign a 4 year contract you are still signing an 8 year contract, of those 8 years 4 of which will be on active duty and those other 4 years will be done in the Inactive Ready Reserve (IRR). While on IRR you will not receive any pay, benefit's, entitlements or hold an ID Card, as well not be required to attend any training or drills, now if at a time of need the Military can call you back up to Active duty for an undisclosed period (instead of in acting a draft they will pull those who are trained and qualified in the IRR), since 2001 the military has called up approximately 2,500 soldiers to Active Duty from the IRR out of the hundreds of thousands or people.
