There have been "armed" forces in the US ever since the first Pilgrims set foot on the continent to settle it. At first all "armed" forces consisted of citizens who banded together to protect themselves and each other from outside attack. As the colonies progressed and developed, a "militia" force, also consisting mostly of armed citizens was formed around a cadre of trained military officers who led and commanded them. As the country progressed into the Revolutionary War against the British Empire a standing army was formed which thus, became the foundation of the United State's current military.
