It all depends on two things: how much printing takes place, and whether the ink on the ribbon dries out quickly.

When printing, the inked ribbon moves slowly along so the printing pins hit fresh ink as much as possible. When the ribbon reaches the end, a lever is (usually) moved over to make the ribbon return back the other way. Eventually, after many passes, the ink will fade and the ribbon will need to be replaced. Or, in an over warm office, for example, the ink may eventually dry and not produce a good print, even if the printer is little used.

Printer forms characters and graphics on a piece of paper by striking a mechanism against an inked ribbon that physically contacts the paper.?

Several types of printers used an ink or carbon ribbon in the way you described. The daisy wheel printer and ball printer would spin a wheel that has the printable characters, then the wheel would strike the ribbon, leaving an imprint on the paper. The dot matrix printer used a number of pins that struck the ribbon to generate a printable character. The chain printer had several full sets of all printable characters on a long chain, and the chain spun rapidly on a track. As the appropriate printable character arrived at the proper location, a high speed solenoid driven hammer struck the chain, causing the ribbon to leave an imprint on the paper.

Difference between laser printer and dot matrix printer?

The difference is the technology used in the printing. The dot matrix printer uses a matrix of needles that press through an inked ribbon to leave marks on the paper. The laser printer uses a roller system to leave charged area on the paper which attracts toner (fine particles of pigment) to stick to the paper. The dot matrix printer is largely obsolete nowadays; it has been replaced by laser/ink jet and thermal systems which are much quieter - making them more suitable for office and home use.

Is a laser printer the same as a dot matrix printer?

"Depending on the amount of dots used in the picture, dot matrixes can be very clear. How ever, most people and businesses prefer to use injet printers, because images are not created by groups of dots, and can be printed on regular 8 1/2x11 paper."

When is a dot-matrix printer used?

A dot matrix is known as an "Impact Printer" in which pins (usually 9 pins or 24 pins) are fired against an inked-ribbon (as used in typewriters). This enables the use of multi-paged, continuous, listing paper to be used in an office, and can be left unattended to complete long print jobs. A tractor roller, that has pegs that engage with holes punched both sides of the paper, will draw the paper through the printer. If a rubber roller is used, instead, standard A4 single-sheet paper, or two pages with a carbon sheet between, can be fed into the printer either by hand or from a paper storage tray.
