It would depend on the route; If you take the Dover-Calais ferry and drive down through France, it is 1,300 miles or 20 hours of driving (8 hours/day = 2.5 days).
Alternatively, you can catch the Portsmouth-Santander ferry, which would leave you a 475 miles drive in 8 hours (plus 2 days on the ferry). Allowing for the hideously expensive French tolls and the saving in fuel, the extra costs of the ferry are probably worth it. (your mileage may vary, etc, etc).
