Fort Whipple was the first Capital of Arizona Territory.
Prescott was the first capital when Arizona was still a territory.
On January 18th of 1862, the Confederacy lay claims to a disputed area in southern New Mexico. They renamed it the Territory of Arizona.
The land area known as Arizona today was once a part of the Territory of New Mexico, became a part of the Confederate States of America as the Confederate Territory of Arizona and later became Arizona Territory with a new dividing border with New Mexico. Arizona became a US State on 14 February 1912.
Arizona Territory existed from 24 February 1863 unil 14 February 1912 when it was admitted as the 48th US State.

They were not American States at that time but they lived in the area that is now in the modern States of Arizona, Utah, New Mexico and Colorado. In 1864 they were Arizona Territory, New Mexico Territory, Utah Territory and Colorado Territory but onlly a few years before that the boundries were very different. For example, there was no Arizona, it was part of New Mexico and that par to Colorado was part of Utah Territory. After the Long Walk they returned to the same area but with less land. They live in the same area to this day. The traditional boundraies of the Navajo lands are the four Sacred Mountains which are in traditoonal order: Mt Blanca in Colorado, Mt Taylor in New Mexico, San Francisco Peaks in Arizona and Mt Herperus in Colorado. It was not a straight line however as Navajo people have lived on the north side of the San Juan river for a very long time.
The capital of the Arizona Territory in 1900 was Phoenix. Arizona did not become a state until 1912. (48th state)
