In 1814 during the War of 1812 with the British the British entered Washington and set fire to the White House. Madison was President at the time and thanks to the quick thinking of Dolly Madison some works of art were saved. It didn't burn down totally and when it was repaired they painted it white. That is how it came to be known as the "white house". Paint was very expensive in the 1700-1800's and no houses were painted in those days so to have a completely white house stood out against all the brown wooden houses. In recent years when repairs and remodeling has been done on the White House they have found evidence of the burn marks from that time long ago.
Dolley Madison fled from the White House not long before the British troops arrived and set it on fire. She was able to carry with her some valuable papers and artwork.
James Madison was living in the White House when the British torched it 1814. He had left some days earlier, but his wife in the White House until shortly before the British arrived. The house was built mostly of stone and so did not really burn down to the ground, but the interior was gutted making the house unlivable for a long time.
The white house construction was started on October 13, 1792..
