John Cabot did not stay in North America for very long. He only stayed long enough to get fresh water, stake the Venetian and Papal banners, and claim the land for the King of England.

John Cabot's voyage in 1497 was originally intended to last about one year. However, he returned to England after only about three months at sea, having set sail in May and returning in August. Despite the brevity of his journey, he is credited with being one of the first Europeans to explore parts of North America since the Vikings.
