How did the first queen of England get to be the first queen of England?

The first undisputed Queen of England to reign on her own, and not due to being married to the King, was Mary I (1553-1558), commonly known as 'Bloody Mary', the eldest child of Henry VIII. Her younger brother Edward VI succeeded Henry in 1547. In 1553 Edward became, mortally as it would turn out, ill. Due to religious diffrences, he was Protestant and Mary Catholic, he attempted to remove her from the line of succession, and instead supported their cousin, Lady Jane Grey. When he passed away, Mary assembled a military force and deposed Lady Jane, taking the throne for herself, thus becoming the Queen of England. As for why Lady Jane, and indeed other females before her, are not seen as the first Queen, it's because they never sat on the throne long enough to have a recognized reign.

What was the christian name of Henry VIII's only son?

Henry VIII's (1491 - 1547) only legitimate son was Edward (1537 - 1553), by Henry's third wife, Jane Seymour (c1504-09 to 1537). When Henry VIII died in 1547, he was succeeded by his son as Edward VI. Because Edward was only 9 years old at his father's death, his uncle Edward Seymour (Duke of Somerset) made himself protector and took control. Together with Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury, Seymour was determined to make the country Protestant. An Act of Uniformity was proclaimed and a new English Prayer Book produced in 1549. There were some protests and rebellion against this, and the Earl of Warwick, John Dudley, put down the rebellions and was also involved in a power struggle with Edward Seymour, ultimately leading to Seymour's eventual arrest and execution. Dudley became the Duke of Northumberland and took control after Seymour's downfall. Edward VI was a rather sickly teenager, and it became apparent that he was suffering from tuberculosis and would not live very long. Northumberland seized his chance to persuade the king to name Lady Jane Grey (1537 - 1554), who was Northumberland's daughter in law, as his successor. Lady Jane Grey was descended from Henry VII the first Tudor king, through her grandmother, Princess Mary Rose Tudor, the younger sister of Henry VIII. But more importantly, Jane was Protestant, whereas the true successor, Mary Tudor, Henry VIII's oldest daughter, was a staunch Catholic. Edward VI died on 6 July 1553 and Jane Grey became queen for only 9 days, when support for Mary became increasingly apparent, as people wanted to see the rightful heir upon the throne. Lady Jane, her husband, father and father-in-law were all imprisoned and eventually executed under the reign of the new monarch, Mary I.

In the Tudor times how long did Mary Jane grey 1 reign for?

Lady Jane Grey, the "nine days queen"Before he died, Edward VI (1537 - 1553) was persuaded to name the Protestant Lady Jane Grey (1537 - 1554) as his successor, because the true heir to the throne, his eldest sister Mary, was a staunch Roman Catholic. Lady Jane was a great granddaughter of the first Tudor king, Henry VII, through her grandmother Princess Mary Rose Tudor, the younger sister of Henry VIII. Four days after Edward died (6 July 1553), and promoted by her powerfully ambitious father in law, the fiercely Protestant Duke of Northumberland, Jane, who was just a pawn in a power game, was proclaimed Queen. However there was strong support for Mary Tudor as the rightful queen, and soon it was clear that Jane was not going to be able to hold on to the throne. So she was persuaded, by her father, to step down, leaving a 9 days reign behind her. Mary I took her rightful position as Queen, and Jane and her supporters were arrested, eventually tried for treason and executed. Lady Jane and her husband, Guildford Dudley, son of the Duke of Northumberland, were beheaded on 12 February 1554.
