On the insistence of Cromwell Parliament sentenced Charles I to death and a Republic was created with Cromwell himself as Lord Protector (a de-facto King) and a "Rump Parliament" made up of MP's who agreed with him. This did not last long after Cromwell's death however and Charles II was crowned King in the 1660s.
