Cinnamon is a spice that is grown in Mideastern parts of the world. Many early civilizations in that area would produce and use spices such as cinnamon, but china was the first (recorded) to do so, around 1500 BCE.
Cinnamon powder lasts indefinitely if sealed in an airtight container, but looses its potency over time. After six months if properly stored the flavor and aroma gets noticeably weaker. The nose knows and a simple sniff test when opening the container will reveal if the essential oils in the powder have evaporated off, or if there is still flavor left. If it doesn't have a strong smell (or no smell at all), then it isn't going to have a lot of flavor.
It can stay fresh for many years if it is stored in the freezer.
Even if carefully stored, all ground seasonings - possible exception to salt - lose their "zip" and flavor over time. If it is more than 2 years old, pitch it and buy fresh.
