I started mine at around 4 inches and now they are at 5.... thinking i might back comb. Either that or pull and twist method. If you start at 5 inches and back comb they will be little stubs. If you do the twist and pull method with beeswax and use elastics... they will almost be about the same size just a little shorter

His main hairstyle seems to be dreadlocks. He first had a shaved head, long straight hair, and also braids. He changes his hairstyles a lot; though i don't know how he gets rid of dreadlocks without shaving his head.
he had them for 4 years and he backcombed his extremely long hair
Curly hair are usually the best kind of hair to make dreadlocks with. Short hair might be a problem though. If you want the thick dreadlocks to stay together, you have to have at least 5 or 6 inches of hair, and the longer it is, the better they will hold together. never use wax dreads thicken over time and can "congo" or grow together to thicken thin dreads to start can end up thick years down the road
Dreadlocks are not from neglecting your hair - they are a hairstyle just as braiding or tying hair into a tail! Here is a link to an an excellent informational site about dreads.
Regarding the history and origins of dreadlocks, yes, they are old. They are probably the first worn hair style. I imagine thousands of years ago the neanderthals had pretty knotty locks. Sinse dreadlocks can form from simply not combing your hair, it makes sense that people long long ago had dreadlocks. they have been around since history was recorded the earliest bible verses mention dreadlocks and the earliest civilizations wore dreads.
you should get curls or try braids
It depends what your hair is like. Long blue spiky hair with green dreadlocks would not be allowed.
