Blood tests for it are given to check "drug compliance," which is where they make sure you're taking it, and to make sure it's working for you. And to be frank, there's no one answer to this. It depends on the patient and on the insulin in use - one person might need five or six doses a day, while the guy sitting in the next chair might only need one.
