Curious that you should ask. NASA engineers are even now preparing to launch a space probe that will come very close to the Sun; we expect it will take about 7 years from launch until the probe reaches its closest approach at about 4 million miles out.
The reason it takes so long is that fuel is heavy, and the more fuel they need to launch from Earth, the bigger the original rocket has to be. So they are skimping on fuel and relying on gravity-assist maneuvers to "slingshot" past Venus a couple of times to achieve the desired final orbit. If we had bigger rockets able to launch more fuel, we wouldn't need to get so creative about gravity-assist maneuvers, and could go pretty much directly in a matter of a year or so.
