If the sniper was firing a standard 647gr full metal jacket projectile at a standard velocity of 2850 feet per second, and there is 5280 feet per mile.then we are looking at a distance of 7,920 ft. and a diminishing velocity as the distance grows.i would assume it would take a bullet flight of 6-8seconds for the bullet to travel this distance.

How does a sniper fire?

That would depend on where your target is, sniper terrain( i.e. wooded, desert, moving on a boat, or chopper. Most sniper marks are disposed of while the sniper is in a prone position. Preference plays a key here. Again, if my target is less than a mile away and I've got clean conditions and am not in a hurry, I'll go prone and just relax my body. Then the mark is history. What is the most dangerous sniper rifle that can kill a person from up to 4 miles away?

The longest sniper kill in recorded history was made in Afghanistan by a Canadian sniper with a .50 caliber TAC-50 rifle at a range of 2,430 meters, which is well under 4 miles. Even at this range with such a powerful weapon, it was a lucky shot, which would lead to the conclusion that a kill at 4 miles would be next to impossible. - - - - - I don't think you'd ever kill someone from four miles away with a sniper rifle. That's six thousand meters. If you were trying to shoot someone with a .50-cal round, you're looking at a flight time of roughly seven seconds. In that time wind can push the bullet, the target can move, someone could walk in front of the bullet, just lots of things. Also, the maximum effective range of the round is somewhere between 1000 and 2000 meters depending on what you fire it in. If you need to kill someone that far out and you can't move closer, you're better off calling in artillery on him.

What is the maximum effective range on a gun?

It depends on the gun! artillery can be fired from 10-20 miles away and some sniper rifles can fire 2-3 miles but a shotgun has a maximum range of about 50m.
