Most people do know them as Dental Nurses, but the PC way to say it is Dental Assistant. I prefer to call them glorified cleaners myself :D I am a dental nurse, and It will take you 2 years at the most to qualify at NVQ Level 3 oral health care.
Im currently training to be a dental nurse :D I am doing a level 3 NVQ in Oral Health Care, and working full time in a dental hospital! I looked online for application forms and found one for the hospital. You can also go to a practice and ask if they have training opportunities.

Usually to become a nurse it takes 5-6 years.
it takes 7 years to become a certified nurse midwife
There is no such thing as a dental nurse. A nurse can work in an orthodontist office, but dental techs are the "dental nurses" you speak of. There is such a thing as a dental nurse, but the correct term is dental assistant. A dental Tech is something completely different. (A tech works in a lab and makes appliances and false teeth etc) You do not need any special qualifications to be a dental nurse but it is handy to know biology. Everything you need to know will be covered in the course.
