The LD50 for ambien (zolpidem) is about 600-700mg/kg, or about 45,600mg for a normal sized adult. This is roughly 3650 12.5mg pills. So no, you can not die from ODing on Ambien. You can have severe adverse reactions (hallucinations, not being able to speak/move etc.), but you will most likely fall asleep for several, several hours and feel super drowsy the next day. If you combine ambien with other depressants (esp alcohol) then it CAN be fatal due to respiratory suppression.

The answer below is informative but INCORRECT in stating that it can be lethal in any form. Ambien is pretty much like a benzo (slightly different chemically) and like benzos, it is not lethal.

120mg of Ambien (Zolpidem) can definitely be lethal in any form, instant or CR. Most people can only take a few before they immediately fall asleep. The people who can stay awake start hallucinating and/or fall into delirium. On 2 occasions I have taken up to 200mg of Ambien (Instant release) and was physically unable to take any more. I experienced nightmarish hallucinations, seizures, and was unable to talk coherently for about 6 hours. The entire next day I felt as if the World had changed, and everything made me uncomfortable. I could not look anyone in the eye while I was talking to them. I mumbled everything I said. I could not eat and could not function like a normal human being. Both times I had severe diarrhea the next day. It took several days to completely recover from both incidents, and if I had consumed alcohol, or quite possibly and other depressant, I am fully convinced I would have died.

It is best to stay away from large doses of Ambien. They call it "Non-Narcotic," but don't be fooled by that. This is a dangerous, dangerous drug with tons of potential for abuse and addiction. It is best not to learn that the hard way, I promise you.

For rats, a good human analogue the LD50 is more than 600mg/kg. As the usual human dosage of zolpidem (Ambien) is 5-10mg, this is a huge number of pills -- anamazing quantity.

I short, in anything approaching a normal supply of Ambien, they are not typically lethal.

This does not mean you can safely overdose on Ambien, as the effects may be indeterminate. But acute overdose resulting in death is not a likely outcome.

There are no recorded, definite Ambien)zolpidem) fatalities at this time. The LD50 for rats is astronomical, and so much so that extrapolation to humans is questionable. Some anecdotal evidence talks of cases admitted with 4g zolpidem dosages that slept for a few days then recovered. So, in direct answer, the number is not known but will be extremely high.

This however doesn't mean that megadose of Ambien are safe. There are quite a few surprising side effects, including but not limited to amnesia, sleep walking, sleep eating, promiscuity (!), dizziness and others.

Ambien is a surprisingly safe drug and not easily lethal, but still merits caution in administration.
