During the Apollo programme, Apollo 8 was the first to fly to the Moon, though it was not intended to land; it didn't even have a Lunar Module.

Apollo 9 tested the Lunar Module in orbit around the Earth, and Apollo 10 was a "dress rehearsal" for the landing, descending to within 10 miles of the surface.

Apollo 11 carried out the first landing, and it was followed by 6 other missions, thought Apollo 13 did not land due to an on-board explosion whilst on the way to the Moon.

In all, 6 Apollo missions landed; Apollos 11, 12, 14, 15, 16 and 17.

The final landing took place in December 1972.

At the moment, it is expected that the next people to reach the Moon may do so around the year 2020.
