Although where "Q" actually came from is not explained, the original role was that of Major Boothroyd played by Peter Burton in Dr. No. Burton was not available for the next movie so they picked Desmond Llewelyn to play him, then known by Q. He has the distinction of appearing in more James Bond movies (17) than any other actor.
