As reincarnations can be from any condition or sex to any other condition or sex there is no reason to suspect that a female reincarnation of a lama is not possible. The Dalai Lama examines this potential eventuality in his discussion of compassion stating that you should not hate a person because in a pervious life he could have been the mother to you in one of your previous lives. For the vast bulk of people there is no knowledge ofwhat there previous countless lives have been.

When does the Dalai Lama become what he is?

The Dalai Lama does not become what he is, (Like Popeye) he is what he is and has been that for fourteen reincarnations. In Buddhism an enlightened person can refuse to enter Nirvana, chosing instead to return to the cycle of death and rebirth to help others become enlightened. After the death of the existing Dalai Lama the problem is to find where the reincarnation has occurred. This is usually expected to be in Tibet. The search is the responsibility of the High Lamas of the Gelugpa Tradition and the government of Tibet. It can take around two or three years (or more) to identify the new incarnation of the Dalai Lama. The High Lamas conduct several rituals to increase the odds of finding the reincarnation quickly. They look for omens and seek hintsin their dreams. They also devise tests for candidates they feel may be the reincarnation. Having been found, the child is brought to Lhasa (or a similar location) for training in Buddhist thought and knowledge

How long has the Dalai lama been the Dalai lama?

In one sense, the present Dalai Lama (Tenzin Gyatso, shortened from Jetsun Jamphel Ngawang Lobsang Yeshe Tenzin Gyatso) has been that since his birth on 6 July 1935. However since the present Dalai Lama is the reincarnation of all previous Dalai Lama, he could be said to have been in that position since the First Dalai Lama, Gedun Drupa, who was was born in 1391

How long does it take a Zen Buddhist to reach Nirvana?

It takes as long as it takes. The course to enlightenment can takes many thousands of lifetimes. However the person who is presently a Zen Buddhist may have been through these reincarnations already and learned from them and may be ready to become enlightened. This does not however mean he is going to Nirvana as the enlightened may opt to return to the cycle o death and rebirth to enlighten others.

Why was there a buddist bible in your hotel room?

Why not. The Gideon society holds no exclusive rights for putting bibles into hotel rooms. Buddhists have the save freedom to express their views and beliefs as any other system. The only problem is that there is no "Buddhist Bible". There could have been pamphlets from a Buddhist temple, one of the Dalai Lama's books, or even non-Buddhist books like the I Ching, The Art of War, or a Book of Five Rings. Alternately thee could have been a Christian Bible in one of the many foreign languages the Gideons are want to translate it into.

Why did the Dalai Lama get his name?

Back when Tibet came under the rules of the Mongolian Khans, Tibetan Buddhism was the state religion and the Mongolian emperor appointed his favorite (personal) lama as the political leader of Tibet. Until recently, the position held both spiritual and political power. After the death of a high lama, a search is often conducted to find the reincarnation. As the current Dalai Lama has described, this process is challenging and often political in nature. He has initiated changes to reduce the politicization of the process. The current Dalai Lama is was born as Lhamo Thöndup, but his name was changed upon being recognized as the Dalai Lama. The current Dalai Lama, now commonly known as Tenzin Gyatso, initiated a democratically elected parliament for the Tibetan government in exile and recently separated the political from the spiritual leadership. Today a democratically elected "prime minister" heads the Tibetan Government in Exile. Why is the dalai lama so important to history?

The Dalai Lama is the official head of Tibetan Buddhism, and the head of Tibet. Due to Chinese occupation, which began in 1959, the Dalai Lama has been in exile. Tibetan Buddhists believe that the present Dalai Lama is the reincarnation of a Dalai Lama from a past life, who has come back to complete important work.
