No one will ever be able to say how many men served in either army during the war. The northern army had much better records but still precision is impossible.

Estimates of the number of southern soldiers range from a low of 600,000 to a high of 1.1 million. The best estimates are the result of careful scholarship, and conclude that around 900,000 men served in the southern army at some time during the war. This was practically every man of military age in the south. Peak strength at any one time was probably 600,000.

The best estimates of the northern army are that 2.1 million soldiers wore Union blue at some point during the war
