Of the 52 US Navy Submarines lost during WW2, fifty were lost in the Pacific and only two were lost in the Atlantic Oceans (both by accidents). The two Atlantic US Submarines lost were the USS Dorado and USS R-12. The Submarine DORADO was sunk by friendly fire (US Aircraft) and the Submarine R-12 was sunk during a diving accident.

Most large ships of the German Navy had been sunk or disabled by June 1944. The vessels which did try to intercept the Normandy invasion were mainly submarines, including some midget submarines. By this time however, the Allies had air superiority and had mainly solved the problem of detecting and destroying German U-Boats. Some ships were lost or damaged by torpedo or mine but not enough to cause problems for the Allies.
World wide, probably close to 2,000 subs were in use; with Germany using close to a thousand of them.Ans 2 - During WW2 the Germans had 1,072 subs and lost 705.The Japanese had 181 and lost 130The Royal Navy had 218 and lost 76.The US Navy had 288 and lost 52The Soviet Navy had 280 and lost110The Italian Navy had 172 and lost 128Other Navies such as Netherlands, Poland etc. had small numbers of submarines, but I don't have accurate records of how many. The total number would be a bit over 2,000
None in war, plenty during target practice...USN lost at least two in accidents during the 1960's (USS Thresher and USS Scorpian); the USSR lost several to accidents but will only confess up the two or three of them.
None, they were all lost during the great thermonuclear war that occured in the 1960's/
Most subs that were lost we're on Germany's side because they employes the most subs, and after the code was broken subs began sinking on the German side routinely.
